Three Tips for Hiring a Contractor
1. Get advice from unbiased experts
The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Energy Star are two reputable agencies that provide excellent advice on their websites on how to hire a contractor for renovations and for heating and ventilation projects. Take their advice to help you lower your risk of being disappointed in the work of the contractor you eventually hire.

2. Compare contractors
CMHC, Energy Star and many other experts agree that you should compare at least three suitable contractors. To find contractors, you can use this directory, or check with the Yukon Housing Corporation. A family member, friend, or neighbour who has had similar work completed can tell you about the dependability of the contractors they worked with, the quality of the work and their overall experience with that company.

3. Check credentials
Along with ensuring that your contractor has a valid business licence and carries appropriate insurance and WCB coverage, you can also check their credentials. The following organizations offer courses and provide accreditation in various energy related specialties. Search their web sites to see if the contractors you are comparing have current accreditations in their fields.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) certification database includes the names of individuals who have successfully completed an industry-recognized course of studies in mechanical ventilation design and installation, heat loss and gain calculations, integrated combo systems, hydronic design and more. Search for HRAI certified Yukon businesses.

Wood Energy Technology Transfer Inc. (WETT Inc.)
is a non-profit training and education association managed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by holders of valid WETT certificates. Through professional training and public education, WETT Inc. promotes the safe and effective use of wood burning systems in Canada. Find a Yukon WETT certified professional.

The Association of Professional Engineers of Yukon is a self-governing body of Professional Engineers that regulates and governs the engineering profession in Yukon. Only individuals licensed by the Association of Professional Engineers of Yukon are permitted by law to undertake and assume responsibility for engineering projects in Yukon. Current membership list.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Find a LEED certified professional.

The Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) is an independent, professional self-regulatory body which upholds excellence in the profession by establishing stringent education, experience and examination standards for entry to practice, as well as continuing competence and conduct standards through which architects maintain their exclusive rights to both practice and title in British Columbia. Find an AIBC registrant.

CSA International is a provider of product testing and certification services for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas and a variety of other products. Recognized in the U.S., Canada and around the world, CSA's marks appear on billions of products worldwide. Search for CSA Certified Product Listings.

The Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) is an ISO 9000 registered organization that offers product certification for insulating glass units, education to the industry, technical publications and guidelines for the manufacture of insulating glass units and research to advance new technologies in the manufacture of insulating glass units. View the IGMA certified product directory.

To qualify for the EnergyStar symbol, products must meet technical specifications designed to ensure that they are among the top energy performers on the market. Search for EnergyStar Products.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Company (CMHC) provides mortgage loan insurance, mortgage-backed securities, housing policy and programs, and housing research. There are private consultants who have completed the CMHC Residential Indoor Air Quality Investigator Training Program who provide consulting services to the public. Call 1-800-668-2642 for the name of a trained investigator in Yukon.
