The Yukon government has adopted and is currently implementing the Yukon Biomass Energy Strategy. The goal of this strategy is to facilitate the development of a biomass energy sector to help heat buildings and homes using wood, Yukon’s primary biomass resource.
The Government of Yukon released the Energy Strategy for Yukon [ 2 MB] in 2009. The strategy sets out the government’s energy priorities, strategies and actions. The Yukon Biomass Energy Strategy [ 1.4 MB] is part of the strategy’s Renewable Energy priority action to “develop a wood based bio-energy industry in Yukon by building a local market for wood energy technologies and wood fuel products.” This strategy proposes to facilitate the development of a biomass energy sector to help heat buildings and homes using wood, Yukon’s primary biomass resource.
The Biomass Energy Strategy outlines an approach for the expansion of biomass energy use in Yukon. It discusses the challenges and benefits of using biomass energy, identifies goals and principles for the use of biomass energy and proposes actions for developing and promoting this form of heat in the territory.
There are six key action areas proposed within the strategy for the development of biomass energy in Yukon. They include:
By meeting the challenges of switching from fossil fuels to wood for heat, the actions in this strategy identify a clear path forward to achieving a strong, economically viable, safe and clean biomass energy industry for Yukon.
